Budapest - The City Thats Got the Budabest

Egeszredre! Pronounced egga shega dre. If you worked that one out, cheers! My week in Budapest was certainly not one to forget (although I have trouble remembering some of it...kidding)

I left cute and quaint St.Andrews to weird Budapest. Oh also I forgot to mention that I spent a lovely 2 days with some friends from China days in Frankfurt before Scotland. Thank you Oreagan family for providing the comfiest bed and quality chats. I hope to see you all again soon! They also had just been to Budapest and were only verifying all the great things I've heard from everyone about Budapest.

I arrived in Budapest to Grandio hostel was instantly given a welcome shot. Oh boy. As excited as I was about getting my history on I also knew that Budapest was backpacker heaven for a night (or several) out. I immediately was welcomed by everyone there and quickly joined the funnest squad. My lovelies Katie and Rachel and Alex and Kate and Isabella and everyone there, you guys are rad. I did get to knock off a tourist stop that night at the first and largest ruin bar called Szimpla. Its always nice when a tourist attraction can be incorporated into a night out. Budapest is known for ruin bars, which were actually developed only 5 to 10 years ago and are known for their quirkiness. They have an assortment of furniture on the ceiling, a maze of odd rooms, and a black and white movie playing in the background with live music. I highly recommend going to one if you find yourself in Budapest.

Budapest has got some HISTORY. I wish my brain was able to retain even a fraction of what I learned so that I could brake it down for you all, but honestly I cant. Here is what I know though: Budapest is two cities, Buda and Pest. Buda is identified with the Hapsburgs and all their royalty while Pest is the counter to all that royalness with all its young energy and nightlife. I only went to Buda on my last day to walk up to the top of Fishermen's Bastion to admire the river and Mathias Church. I was in a walking fit so I also went up the Citadella which is another hill near the Buda castle. The napping grass was a 6 out of 10. The view from my napping spot was amazing. I could see the Parliament building from it, but it was a bit too long and I ended up leaving red from an allergic reaction. The best napping grass was on Margaret Island where I spent the most lovely afternoon with some lovely souls. After a massive meal of sushi, a group of us head to a big park where we all lay as one of the English guys read Norse mythology to us. I really think that you can learn a lot about a place from the park atmosphere.

I would say highlights for me in Budapest was the Danube river cruise. My squad danced the night away with some champagne and gorgeous views of the parliament and the castle at night. It was pretty magical. The overall best thing about Budapest was not the gulash or the fiesty Hungarian ladies that apparently throw pee out their window if you're too loud in the streets, but the people. I really felt like I was a part of a family. The first night I met a guy and asked him where he was from. He just stared at me and said what and skipped off. When I moved to Meander hostel (my absolute fave) he was the one to check me in. His name was Tej and we hit it off. We had a deep scholarly conversation about Islam as he was Muslim and I was reading There's No God But God. This is the best part of travelling, meeting Tejs around the world. One minute your discussing the misconceptions of jihad and the next minute your talking about screamo bands and rap. I also got the pleasure to meet Naomi, a true gem and also one of Jacob's favorite people. I know this isnt about the city of Budapest, but for me this was Budapest. Getting to meet interesting, quirky, and cool travellers is what makes or breaks a place. You could be in the biggest dump of a city, but if you're with people who are there to learn about the world and have a good time then its all worthwhile. I will definitely be back to Budapest!
